The Taste of Things & 5 Movies for Foodies

The Taste of Things

Movies about food are a lovely experience. The Taste of Things is no exception.

The Small Reviews usually feature social commentary, scary horror, and irreverent comedy. Sometimes, it’s just good to sit back, relax, and see a pretty film about people cooking and enjoying food. We view movies as a mental cure and an escape from our brutal reality. And this kind of film is the perfect mental escapism for people who love to enjoy the company of loved ones through food. So, yeah, it’s for everyone. We all love to eat and kiss a partner!

We all love food and good company, and that’s why The Taste of Things has been so beloved since its release. It’s a captivating film about your love for cooking and falling in love with the person next to you. This is what I got to say in Letterbox

An exquisite feast both visually and sentimentally. This delightful film celebrates life and human relationships through something we all enjoy…food. The most precious food porn I’ve ever seen.

This is a legit promise. You will see the most precious food porn ever. Not only for the visuals but also for the acting performances. Benoît Magimel is riveting, and emotive. A portrayal of a passionate man. And Juliette Binoche is as natural and heartwarming as the other best performances of her illustrious career.

In celebration of a film like this being made, let’s look at five more films for foodies. Do you have any favorite movies about food or with a bunch of delicious-looking meals? Let us know in the comments.

1 Bao

Property of Disney

When speaking about food movies, the first Pixar (or animated in general) entry that comes to mind is Ratatouille. And for good reasons, it is one of the best films in Pixar’s catalog. But when it comes to foodie movies, Bao gets the prize for the best.

Think you’re now desensitized from crying to Pixar movies? Think again, Bao is a story about an aging woman suffering from “empty nest” syndrome. It’s a poignant short story about motherhood and nostalgia with a cute anthropomorphic dumpling.

2 Tampopo

Property of Toho Co.

Our second pick for foodie films is the Japanese cult classic, Tampopo. Starring Ken Watanabe and Perfect Days’ Koji Yakusho, Tampopo is a journey to finding the perfect Ramen recipe. It’s beautiful, compelling, funny, and has weird interludes illustrating love and food. It’s food porn at its best.

3 Julie & Julia

Property of Sony Pictures

The lives of Julie Powell and Julia Child are intertwined in this autobiographical film. It’s impossible to miss Meryl Streep’s award-winning performance. And like all of the other films on this list so far, we couldn’t help but smile as we watched the love put into cooking. Also starring Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci, this is a delightful comedy-drama to sit back and watch after dinner.

4 Chef

Property of Open Road Films

Indie darling turned Iron Man director Jon Favreau took a break from mainstream Hollywood and made this gratifying film about a culinary artist leaving everything behind for his own food truck and creative freedom. This feelgood comedy-drama has an ensemble cast including Favreau himself, Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, and even Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. I wish Jon takes a break from producing Star Wars shows and make something smaller and pleasing like this. We need more of it.

5 Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

It was critical to consider that the characters from these movies must be food-obsessed when putting together this list. As a fact, I would say the movie’s MacGuffin was Harley Quinn’s breakfast sandwich. It was the key to her happiness after “leaving” The Joker. Also, did you look at it? It’s the most delicious-looking sandwich ever!

This is happiness.
