Previously, we counted down our top movies of the year. The new year has come, and it is time to wait impatiently for our most anticipated films of 2024.
Can’t wait for any release? Let us know in the comments. Also, follow us on social media to check if these films meet our expectations.
Honorable Mentions
- Love Lies Bleeding, Directed by Rose Glass
- Deadpool 3, Directed by Shawn Levy
- Lisa Frankenstein, Directed by Zelda Williams
10 The Fall Guy
Directed by Bullet Train’s David Leitch, this one looks like a lot of fun. His track record of good popcorn flicks and Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt starring in what seems to be a funny love-hate relationship. This is one I’ll be enjoying.
9 Joker: Folie à Deux
In 2019, Todd Philips brought a long-awaited and long-overdue Joker biopic. Joaquin Phoenix exceeded expectations with one of the best performances of his career. The follow-up Folie à Deux is a musical with Phoenix returning as the title character and none other than Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
So far, the first look pics and teaser trailers suggest it will be a tragedy of epic proportions, and we’re ready for it. We can’t wait to see Harley Quinn sing on the big screen.
8 Ballerina
John Wick has been one of my favorite movie franchises of the last 10 years. One that is perfection in my eyes as they keep raising the bar with each movie. Starring Ana de Armas, Ballerina is set between the 3rd and 4th installments. It is another revenge story featuring Rooney as the ballerina assassin searching for the murderers of her family.
The trailer looks like it will not be the one that will break the streak of great cinema. It looks beautiful, poetic, and violent, like always.
7 Whatever Jordan Peele is Directing
First, all three Jordan Peele films have been a hit with critics and audiences alike. Second, he’s already teasing that it “could be his favorite movie if he makes it right.” Therefore, it will be one of my most anticipated films of the year unless I find out they already announced a release date for 2025.
6 Challengers
Just a reminder, Luca Guadagnino’s new film is where Zendaya is about to have a threesome with two dudes in the trailer. Her character is a tennis player turned coach who stands between her boyfriend and her ex, who’s her boyfriend’s former best friend. This sports drama promises to be a grand slam.
5 Furiosa
George Miller’s triumphant return to the Mad Max franchise is one of my favorite movies of the 2010s. The long-awaited spin-off Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga looks as beautiful and adrenaline-pumping as Fury Road. In addition, Anya Taylor-Joy looks like a badass that fits the character like a glove. Which is a promise that it will be a splendid cinematic spectacle. I’m ready for the ride!
4 Mickey 17
Parasite’s Bong Joon-ho is back with our International pick of this list, Mickey 17. The teaser trailer is simple. The camera zooms up to Robert Pattinson opening his eyes, and the release date appears on the screen. That’s it, and that’s enough to get us excited about what will probably be another genre-blending thriller. Also starring Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collete, and Steven Yeun, this seems to be one of 2024s finest.
This is not the first time Robert Pattinson is in space. Check out 2018s High Life, directed by Claire Denis.
3 Nosferatu
One of the best filmmakers of our times, Robert Eggers, has been turning myths into palpable thrillers. Whether it is New England tales with The Witch and The Lighthouse or Nordic mythology with The Northman, it seems like he can do it all. This is why Nosferatu is among the most anticipated films this year. We can’t wait to see how realistic and alluring Eggers’s version of the gothic legend will be.
2 Civil War
Speaking about the best filmmakers of our times, Alex Garland has done to sci-fi what Robert Eggers had to horror, elevating the genre to a high bar with his eloquence and sharp approach to filmmaking. The trailer for his new film, Civil War, looks very impressive, and it will probably stir the same people who were so offended by Men the wrong way. One of the most impressive casts of the upcoming announced films, this promises to be both controversial and fascinating.
Just look at this map already. It looks exciting.
1 Dune: Part Two
I don’t believe the perfect movie exists. However, if you ask me if Denis Villaneuve’s first part of the Dune adaptation is the perfect movie, I would say it’s close. We can’t wait to see part two of this accomplishment. Hopefully, time will go fast watching other great movies. We’ll be there, ready for Dune: Part Two in no time.
