Small Films 22: Every Time We Meet for Ice Cream Your Whole F*cking Face Explodes

Every Time We Meet for Ice Cream Your Whole F*cking Face Explodes

A Weekly Short Film Review

This week, we present an oddly adorable coming-of-age romantic short. A cute film with a name grindcore song title, Every Time We Meet for Ice Cream Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes, directed by Anthony Cousins.

Based on the book written by Carlton Mellick III, this disturbing short tells the story of a boy who’s in love with a bizarre girl from school. Actually, THE bizarre girl from school. She has a squeaky voice and scars on her face. It will be a matter of time before he takes her on a date and discovers what’s wrong with her.

Anthony Cousins is a director and producer based in Minnesota. Additionally to Your Fucking Face Explodes, he’s directed and produced several shorts. His first one, When Susurrus Stirs, was another strong contender for this Small Films edition. It’s a great short for lovers of horrifying body horror.

This year, his first full-length Frogman was released. Frogman stands out among this year’s good horror films as a slow burner yet a scary and fun-found footage film. You can read my Frogman review here.

Going back to Every Time We Meet for Ice Cream Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes, it’s a splendid short piece of cinema. Wes Anderson meets David Cronenberg in a cute, sinister, and wholesome movie.
