Small Films 05: FIGS

FIGS

A Weekly Short Film Review

This week’s short film is poignant and inspiring. The short documentary FIGS, directed by Sterling Hampton IV, introduces Bonnie, AKA “the fig lady,” to the world. She’s an 81-year-old Black American woman who speaks about her life as a teacher, author, wife, and friend while seeing the last of her living siblings for the first time in 25 years.

Her life is an odyssey that deserves its feature film. With each opportunity to bigger and better things came the circumstances to move to another city. She has traveled extensively throughout the country during her long life. It’s a real American dream story, an account of someone who survived all odds as a black woman.

It’s a brief 10-minute journey, but full of emotion and hope.
