A Weekly Short Film Review
In this week’s edition of Small Films, we transport ourselves to a dystopian representation of Kinshasa, Republic of Congo, with the Experimental short film/music video, Zombies, by Belgian rapper Baloji. Besides paying homage to his Congolese heritage, the artist also comments on modern society’s dependency on technology.
The synopsis found everywhere I looked in my research is the following:
The film Zombie is a journey between hope and dystopia in a hallucinated Kinshasa, from the culture of the hair salon to futuristic solitary clubbing, from the urban parade to the glory of a dictator in campaign (Papa Bollo) to modern western in the Takeshi Kitano style.
I couldn’t agree more with this perfect description. Thematically, this is a film that could stay relevant for years to come. This pleasant audiovisual experiment will make you dance and think about your relationship with your phone.
In 14 minutes, Bajoli created a world I’d like to explore more. It’s trippy and quaint and does pay tribute to the great Takeshi Kitano.
