Music to Write About Movies Vol. 3

Music to Write About Movies Vol. 3

Music from movies and life outside the couch.

Our third installment of the Music to Write About Movies playlist series is here. This time, it’s mostly about songs featured and inspired by Vera Drew’s Batman parody, The People’s Joker. It is a film about the transgender experience through the point of view of a captivating version of The Joker.

Play the playlist below and read my review of The People’s Joker. It was a lot of fun watching the movie, listening to the soundtrack and songs from other playlists inspired by it, and putting together my playlist. Like always, there’s new music from artists I love and even some tracks I listened to live. Enjoy and share!

Playlist Highlights

Justin Krol & Quinn Scharber

Since the main inspiration for this playlist is The People’s Joker, how couldn’t I highlight the duo of composers responsible for its soundtrack? Justin Krol and Quinn Scharber did an exceptional job capturing every scene and expressing the main character’s sentiments through their music. From epic superhero fanfare to affectionate downbeat tracks. They can do everything!

JPEGMAFIA

JPEGMAFIA has been on my radar since 2018 with his second studio album, Veteran. Since then, it’s been part of my playlists featuring other modern rappers and so-called “punk rap” like Tyler the Creator, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, and even Death Grips. I Like it noisy, bold, and provocative. His new album is everything I love about his music turned up to eleven and is a perfect addition to the inflammatory nature of this entire playlist.

Venus De Mars

Ok, Small Reviews is currently based in the Twin Cities, so expect lots of Minneapolis artists in these playlists. Venus De Mars is a local transgender musician and visual artist who’s been doing it since 1994. The video from her latest single, Even With Scars, features local transgender people and is passionate enough to be the climactic song of any film. If you like glam rock, you’ll definitely like Venus.

High Vis

English hardcore band High Vis has caught my attention lately. It is one of the most promising bands because of its unique blend of hardcore and baggy. To put it in a way some people can understand, it’s like Turnstile and Blur had a kid. Some songs even suggest Turnstile had the kid with New Order. I don’t know, I’m no music journalist. But I know I’ll see them open for Show Me The Body soon.

OFF!

A supergroup consisting of living legends from Circle Jerks, Red Kross, and Rocket From The Crypt, they recently hung their instruments. Fortunately, they said goodbye with the release of a movie called Free LSD. And that’s the funniest way I’ve ever seen a band retire cause the film is funny is freaking funny.
